Trauma Training for Professionals
Self-Care and Trauma Training Can Help Your Staff
Keeping up with personal and professional responsibilities can be exhausting, especially when you work with individuals who are experiencing challenging thoughts, feelings or behaviors. If we don’t take care of ourselves while helping others, we may become overwhelmed and distressed as well. In fact, the leading cause of burnout in the helping professions—such as psychology, teaching and social work—is unattended Secondary Trauma; or, being traumatized by the trauma of those being served.
Training classes are an excellent tool for preventing or treating secondary trauma in your staff, students, coworkers and yourself. Many organizations recognize the breadth and depth of challenges their staff face, but may question whether hiring a professional trainer is worth the time and cost. Rest assured, the investment is worthwhile. During training, your staff can develop the resources and skills they need to help gain a sense of who each client is, where they come from and why they are struggling to live with ease. By learning how to foster this connection and understanding, you can enhance your team’s ability to create appropriate treatment plans, maintain a compassionate stance and stay clear from vicarious trauma.
Why Lisa Cohen Bennett, Ph.D.?
I have been helping adults, youth and families for over 40 years, providing one-on-one and group psychotherapy in residential treatment, runaway shelters, county mental health facilities, clinics and private practice. In addition to operating my private practice in Lafayette, CA, I have provided a variety of trauma-informed trainings for foster parents, adoptive parents, mental health professionals and educators around the country for over 25 years.
I have seen how effective trauma training can be in helping professionals gain greater awareness, understanding and compassion for themselves and others. In addition to offering a wide variety of trauma-informed training courses, I provide a range of Team Building, Case Consultation and Supervision services to help your staff gain new tools and resources they can use to work more effectively with challenging populations.
How Does Training Work?
When you call to schedule a training class, we will discuss the topics you would like covered and set a time for me to come to your office or facility. Training classes run between three and four hours in length. Certain training classes are covered in two-parts, with each part taking between three and four hours to complete.
I use an interactive approach during training—including instructive lectures, large and small group discussions and film clips—to help participants delve into self-care and trauma-related topics and better understand how it informs their work and relationship with their clients.

In some cases, I may be able to open up a scheduled training to outside professionals or parents who are looking for additional information on the topic.
You may be interested in training for yourself or your staff but have questions or concerns about professional training and consulting…
We only have so much money we can spend on staff training and development…
The money you dedicate to self-care and/or trauma-informed training is well spent when your staff, students and the people you serve feel more empowered to handle everyday challenges and crises when they arise.
We don’t have time to spend half a day in training.
The time you spend training, team building or consulting is an investment in your program’s future. You are giving yourselves the information and tools you need to help everyone get and stay on the same page during your work together. Additionally, think about how much time will be saved when your team is able to manage anger, frustration and difficult behaviors and build more positive relationships with each other and their clients.
