Rain, rain go away. . .

For the first time in recent memory the rain is pouring while the wind is whipping outside the window.  Years of drought have led us to forget what real rain looks, sounds and even smells like.  Fresh. Clean. Dark. Really wet.  The plants, animals, earth and we need this long-awaited deluge.  Even as we are concerned for the possible flooding in some of our communities, I can't help but be grateful for this winter renewal.

The metaphor is not lost on me.  After a drought, in order for planet resilience, there must be rain and snow.  When one has suffered a loss, gone through a break up or intense hardship, how does healing begin?  Pulling oneself up out of the depths of grief, anger, resentment or sorrow is one of the biggest challenges.  Cleansing the rage, betrayal, lost dreams and beliefs takes time and effort.  How much easier it seems to isolate, eat, sleep, disconnect or wallow in the feelings.

Just as the earth is reborn through a thorough washing, though, so can one's battered heart and soul.  Try these few steps toward resilience:

* Sit quietly with yourself and your breath; releasing all thoughts as they come your way

* Write short notes of health and happiness to yourself on sticky notes and put them around your home:  "You are beautiful," "You deserve the best," "Life gets better," "Spring always comes after winter."

* Get a massage

* Walk in the rain and jump in a puddle

* Go find some new life in flowers popping up from the ground or new growth on trees

* Come up with your own ideas for renewal and rejuvenation

Enjoy the rain while it is here!
